Figure Drawing 101 with Barbara Lydon Tuesdays, May 6, 20 & June 3, 17 6:30-8:30pm Barbara Lydon will demystify figure drawing in this beginning course. Sign up for one class, or the series of four. Different techniques introduced each class. Model fee and materials included in class cost. All experience levels welcome. $90 for series of four classes ($25 per individual class)
Watercolor Basics with Barbara Lydon Wednesdays, May 7, 21 & June 4, 18 6:30-8:30pm Learn the basics of watercolor technique through demonstration and hands on experience with instructor Barbara Lydon. Over the four weeks, students will learn everything you need to know to successfully understand the medium of watercolor. $90
Drawing from Nature with Kathy Hocker Saturday, May 17 1:00-4:00pm Facilitated sessions for anyone wanting to work on nature-inspired art: journals, sketchbooks, or more formal pieces. There will be a short introductory lesson covering some aspect of observation, drawing, or painting, but the bulk of the time will be open studio. All media are welcome. Kathy will be available to provide suggestions, feedback, and assistance. Come prepared to work outside, if the weather cooperates. $20
Pastels with Barbara Craver Sunday May 18 1:00-5:00pm Pastels provide an immediate medium for exploring color. Using artist pastels to create art is an addicting experience, so be warned in advance! Instructor Barbara Craver will discuss color theory and demonstrate the importance of composition and creating a strong tonal structure in paintings. Students will create at least two pastel paintings in class, using a direct approach and one with an underpainting. The types and brands of pastels will be discussed, with the instructor's pastels available to demonstrate, as well as different papers and supports for pastels. Storage, plein air setups, and framing will also be demonstrated. Students may bring their own pastels, or purchase a starter set as part of the materials fee. $45 + $10 materials
Drum Making with Linni Esther Wednesday May 21 & Thursday May 22 6:30-9:00pm This two day class provides an opportunity to create a framed drum made from natural materials. Drums created support an individual’s personal attunement with the energies of nature. The class is timed so that drums will be completed before Celebration ’08. Place an order for drum size when registering, so that supplies can be ordered in advance. $55 class fee + materials fee: 18” drum $115; 15” drum $90; 13” drum $75
Ikebana (Japanese Flower Arranging), with Annie Geselle & Hizako Eldrige Sunday May 25 2:00-4:00pm Practice the art of Japanese Flower Arranging in a relaxed setting. New and experienced Ikebana students welcome. Students bring materials: one branch measuring 2-3 ft, two shorter stems and filler material. $5

The Canvas Community Art Studio & Gallery is a community benefit organization dedicated to supporting the life-long discovery process through the arts. The Canvas is a grassroots center in the truest sense. Our goals, which we achieve through direct services and programming, are to provide access to space and an audience for artists, quality performances and exhibitions for our community and arts education for all. We are also integrally involved in community building efforts in our neighborhood and in the larger community in Alaska. |

The Canvas is an invaluable resource for artists and the community. Founded in 2006 as the community outreach and day habilitation program for REACH, an independent, nonprofit organization serving people who experience disabilities since 1970, The Canvas has become a vital presence in Juneau and Southeast. We provide year-round programming including classes in the visual, literary, pottery and music for all skill levels; technical and business skills classes for artists; performance venue, visual art exhibitions, poetry readings and events; slide lectures and workshops. Our facility houses a large open visual arts studio, pottery shop in-progress, and formal gallery with small performance capabilities. |
