Bright Moments of 2011
Making a list of a handful of bright moments from the past year in the arts is a great way to renew your appreciation for the bounty we Juneauites enjoy on a daily basis, in part because the task is virtually impossible. How can you narrow it down? For me, the only way to approach it is to view the list as an arrow, rather than a box; the items I listed don’t make up a finite group, but point the way toward many more (continue reading)

Sketching a new path:
MK MacNaughton opens art studio Sketch

On walking in to Sketch, a new artist’s studio tucked behind Kenny’s Wok downtown, the first thing you’re likely to notice is the three large vibrant oil paintings on the left-side wall. They are landscapes — in all three a road vanishes into the trees — but the shapes are blurred, as if everything is in motion, the sky, the grass, the trees, the road (continue reading)

At the second gathering of the Woosh Kinaadeiyí poetry slam last fall in Juneau, a teenage girl approached the mike and began reciting a poem about her struggles with homophobia and depression. About half-way through, she faltered, nearly overpowered by emotion. The audience quickly let her know that they weren’t there as passive observers (continue reading).

Canvas welcomes new Director
On the morning of the day she met Annie Geselle, Colorado-based art therapist Kendra Schpok never would have imagined the words she’d be saying to her husband that night.

“What do you think about moving to Alaska?”

Alaska was not on Schpok’s radar — truth be told, it wasn’t even on her bucket list — and her job as an art therapist, while challenging, was one she really enjoyed (continue reading).

Rebuilding a Life
            Annie and Jon
One February morning last year, Annie Geselle slipped and fell on a patch of ice out in front of her house. It’s a moment most of us have experienced in this town of steep hills and constant precipitation, but in Annie’s case, the incident could not be brushed off. It lingered and expanded across days, weeks, months, derailing her life in ways she struggled to understand. It would be spring before she realized she’d sustained a brain injury that morning; a year later she’s still trying to fathom the changes. (continue reading)
