Watercolor Workshop at the Jensen-Olson Arboretum
presented by the Southeast Alaska Land Trust in collaboration with the Canvas

Session 1: Saturday, July 11th, 10am to 12pm
Session 2:  Saturday, July 11th, 12:30 - 2:30pm

These plein air watercolor workshops will take place in the open-air setting of the Jensen-Olson Arboretum. The historic Jensen-Olson Arboretum occupies the property of the 1st Conservation Easement that The Southeast Alaska Land Trust ever obtained. It features over 800 native and cultured species, and is well on its way to having the largest collection of primroses in all of North America. Cost is $20 per person and includes art supplies, cookies, and coffee.  Each workshop is limited to 20 participants, so don’t wait!

Bound + Plein
Saturday and Sunday, July 18th - 19th, 5:00 - 8:00pm
 
In this two day workshop you create and bind your own handmade sketchbook for drawing and watercolor, and then carry it into the mountains for a lesson in plein air sketching and watercolor painting.  You will receive an in depth introduction to the craft of bookbinding, the exciting practice of painting from life, and a unique sketchbook that you may continue to fill throughout the summer. Materials provided. $80 (plus tax)

Abstracting the Figure: Mixed Media with Chris Taylor
Sundays, July 19th - August 9th, 11:00am - 2:00pm

Throughout history the human body has been a significant focus in art, from idealism to abstraction. This class will focus on creating art from a live model, learning and exploring ways in which one can abstract the human form. Principles such as composition, value pattern, and anatomy will be covered, but more importantly we will learn how combing these principles with dynamic mark making and an array of mixed medias, can open the door to a new ways of seeing and drawing the figure. Inks, charcoal and acrylics on paper will be used. This class is open to all levels of ability. $225 (plus tax)

Plein Air Painting with Tim Ortiz
Thursdays, July 23 - August 13, 6:30 - 9:00pm

Landscape Painting outdoors at Four fantastic local locations.  You will engage in the exciting experience of Working from direct observation to create landscape paintings with an authenticity and energy that can not be achieved via photo reference.  Learn to compose and complete paintings on site in oil and watercolor. $175 (plus tax)

Block Printing (woodcuts and Linocuts) with Tim Ortiz
Thursdays, August 27th - September 17, 6:30 - 9:00pm

Students will learn classic block printing process, including carving wood and linoleum blocks to create single and multi-color editions.  This is a fun and accessible process that will be a great asset to any artist's repertoire. $175 (plus tax)

DRAW (10am - 12pm)
Every Saturday, take advantage of a purpose built still life or a live model in a studio setting to develop and maintain your drawing skills. Visiting artists Tim Ortiz and/or Andreana Donahue will be available for guidance and instruction.  Basic materials (graphite, charcoal, erasers and paper) will be provided, but please feel free to bring your personal materials. We invite you to stay after for Critique. $20 (plus tax)

CRITIQUE (12pm - 1pm)
Because discussion and criticism is essential to healthy creative communities The Canvas will be holding regular critiques open to local artists working in any medium. Critiques will be moderated by visiting artists Tim Ortiz and Andreana Donahue, and will provide an opportunity to show your work and get feedback from your fellow Juneau artists. FREE to anyone.

Wheel Throwing with Mercedes Munoz
Tuesdays, July 14th - August 4th, 5:30 - 7:30pm (4 weeks)

This class will focus on the fundamentals of working at the potter’s wheel. Students will develop good techniques in centering clay and throwing. Though it is aimed at first time potters, this class is also appropriate for students looking to refine their skills. All materials are included in the price of the class. $150 (plus tax)

Missed a class?  A particular class not working with you schedule?  The Canvas is now offering classes for your group that fit your schedule.  Contact our Artistic Coordinator, Brandon Howard, at bhoward@reachak.org with how many are in your group and what you are interested in. If the Canvas can meet your needs, he will set you up with an experienced instructor and materials and a schedule that works for you.  We can do evening and weekend workshops, as well as classes that are single or multiple sessions.
