This landscape class will focus on techniques involved with inking and watercolor painting. In addtion to discussing design basics, various brush usages, and painting applications, this course will cover important aspects of landscape painting such as atmospheric perspective, warm vs. cool color temperatures, and establishing a focal point. This is a fantastic course for anyone looking to get into landcapes, and anyone looking to brush up on their skills and advance their watercolor techniques. Mixed Media Painting with Candice Christie

Explore the world of mixed media through combining paper, found objects, layers of acrylic mediums, fluid acrylics, and gold leafing. The instructor will discuss the elements of design, as well as demonstrate basic collage techniques, how to create texture with acrylic mediums, stamping techniques, and the use of gold leaf. Abstract Acrylic Painting II with Julie and Kent Crabtree

This class will continue to explore the world of abstraction. Over the course of six weeks, both instructors will guide you through various styles and numerous approaches to abstract painting. Reference materials may be used, however in comparison to the previously offered abstract class, this class will focus more intensely on the free-form painting process; imagination leading the way. This course will give you an introduction to Tlingit art and the different aspects of its visual elements. You will construct Tlingit crest working through drawing, painting, and collage. However, this time around she will also be covering faux encaustics as well as the making and use of gel transfers. Zines with Electra Gardinier
Wednesdays, June 5th - 26th, 6:30 - 9pm (4 weeks)
Publish your own handmade magaine! Zines are independently produced, do-it-yourself magazines. Created in response to mainstream media culture they often include original artwork, collage art or words, poetry, stories, journal entires, photos, non-fiction information, information on local activisim, cartooning, and much more! Zines are a great way to share pieces of diaries/ journals, academia, or sketchbooks with others. In this class we will make our own original zine and xerox another copy. We will then use simple book binding techniques to finish our zine. Finally, we will brainstorm ideas of how to distribute our zines both locally and nationally. If you would like you can bring photos, magazines, poems, essays, fabric, greeting cards, wrapping paper, or anything else you can think of to collage into your zine pages! The Canvas will also provide tons of fabulous resources. Ages 15 and up. $115 (materials included)

Raku Workshop with Louise Kuntz-Tadda

In this special summer time workshop, you will learn about the dynamic world of raku pottery. Experience the entire process by creating, firing, and glazing your own pieces in this three week extravaganza. Tlingit Basket Weaving: Plating and Twining with Ricky Tagaban

This exciting class will be focused on creating art using nature as your inspiration, as well as your art making materials. Each day you will be taken to a new location in beautiful Juneau, and you will use what nature provides at each destination to create your art for the day. Your teacher will guide you in this process and then teach you how to photograph the art so that you can document your creation. Mural Painting with Liz Villanueva

Seeing the big picture is not easy. Creating one together can bea whole lot of fun. We will choose an aspect of Juneau's community that we would like to focus on as a group, and use our research on the issue to inspire a mural made of mixed mediums. The mural, in the style of Diego Rivera, will allow the artists to understand and show multiple perspectives of the topic they explore. Ages 9 and up. $95 (materials included)

Digital Photography with Ben Huff

This course will create an environment for the student to feel comfortable taking pictures with their digital camera. We will, daily, take excursions where we will focus on camera settings, composition, and quality of light. From lamp shades to window hangings, students will learn a variety of differnt ceramic techniques as they build porcelain vessels to capture light.
