To register for classes, call 907-586-1750 or email your name, classes of interest and phone number to: info@canvasarts.org. Full payment must be made at the time of registration. Notice of withdrawal must be received no later than 7 days prior to the first day of class. No refunds will be given after that time. Credit will not be given for missed classes.

Landscape Painting

 

Landscape Painting
with Jackie Manning
Wednesdays, March 3, 10, 24, 31, 6:30-9pm (4 weeks)

Working from personal photographs students will explore landscape painting.  We will examine compositions in nature along with foreground, middle ground and background, as well as learning to use atmospheric space to create depth in painting.  All levels and abilities welcome.  $125 (includes materials)
*Please bring personal landscape photos to the first class. 

 

Portrait Painting

 

Beginning Portrait Painting

Tuesdays, March 2, 9, 23, 30, 6:30-9pm (4 weeks)

In this class we will explore techniques for portrait painting. Working from a model we will examine anatomy and structure to render facial features using oil paint.  This class will also teach brush stroke and oil painting techniques.  New and experienced students welcome. $125 (includes materials & model fee)


Kids Saori Weaving

This class is especially for kids ages 7-11! Learn the basics of Japanese Saori weaving. Design and create your own weaving to take home. $45 (includes materials)


Creating Comics

 

Creating Comics

Saturday, March 6, 3-5pm

In this workshop we'll look at what comics are, what you perhaps didn't know comics could be and how to make comics from start to finish. From superhero adventures to autobiographies, more and more people use comics as a way to tell stories. You can learn about brainstorming, storyboarding, and some of the tricks to actually creating your own comics. By the end of the workshop you should have a short comic of your own creation or perhaps the start of a bigger project to complete on your own. Kids age 7-adult welcome. $20 (includes materials)


The Process of Illustration

 

The Process of Illustration

Sundays, March 7-28, 3-5pm (4 weeks)

Illustrator Averyl Veliz will use popular children’s stories to help you create your own illustrations. Students will learn how to get started by interpreting concepts and ideas, and progress through value and color studies to a completed final illustration. Mediums used will include pen, graphite, ink and watercolor. This class is designed for teens and adults (age 12 and up). $85 (includes materials).

Averyl Veliz is a visual developer (illustrator for film) with a MFA from the Academy of Art University in San Francisco. She is currently working on her own animated project, “A Klondike Tale.”


Batik Scarves

Sunday, March 7, 1-5pm

Create wearable art, using wax resist and permanent fabric dyes on pre-hemmed china silk scarves. Each participant will make 2 scarves in this 4-hour workshop. $55 (includes materials)


Intermediate Jewelry: Stone Setting

 

Intermediate Jewelry: Stone Setting

Mondays, Mar 8-29, 6-9pm (4 weeks)

This class is for intermediate students who have experience with silver and base metals, and know the basics of soldering, sawing, filing, texture and riveting. Move beyond the basics and learn stone setting in a variety of projects in this 4-week course. $175 (includes supplies)

Saturday, Mar 13th & Sunday, March 14, 2-5pm (2 day workshop)

Learn how to create your own one of a kind landscape collage using a variety of decorative papers. Bring a landscape image or work free form. Discussion on how to draw a landscape will start the class. Join the fun as we rip, cut and paste down papers to create something amazing. $55 (includes materials).

The Canvas is very excited to welcome the band Kutandara from Boulder, Colarado to our studio for a special week of marimba classes. The Kutandara Center is dedicated to offering instruction in music from Southern Africa on Zimbabwean-style marimbas.

The Family Workshop (Sunday, March 21) is an opportunity for parents and children ages 6+ to experience playing the marimba.

The Teen/Adult Workshop (Sunday, March 21) will introduce technique and basic arrangements. This is a terrific intro to learning about music through experiencing it! No prior musical experience necessary.

Kids Spring Break Camp (Mon, Mar 22-Fri, Mar 26) will offer kids ages 8+ rotating classes in marimba, dancing, games and songs from Southern Africa.

Teen/Adult classes (Mon, Mar 22-Thurs, Mar 25) is for teens and adults (ages 12 and older) who are interested in learning marimba technique and basic arrangements.

This program is partially funded by the Citizens of the City and Borough of Juneau through sales tax revenues, Daniel Glidman and Pie in the Sky

Zimbabwean marimba music is an art discipline steeped in the tradition of the Shona people of Zimbabwe. The music emphasizes community, beautiful polyrhythmic melodies and infectious rhythms that encourage participation by everyone, no matter what your musical experience.


Saori Weaving

Choose from two sessions: April 3 or 17, 10am-1pm

Learn the basics of Japanese Saori weaving. Design and create your own weaving to take home. Adults and kids age 7 and up welcome. $35 (includes materials)


Sculpture

Saturdays, April 3-May 8, 10am-1pm (6 weeks)

Explore hand-building techniques for sculpting. Bring sketches or photos of a sculpture to the first class and work from the figurative to the abstract. $210 (Class fee includes instruction, additional open studio time, clay, supplies, glazing and firing.


Beginning Jewelry Making

Mondays & Thursdays, April 5, 8, 12, 15, 6-9pm (4 classes)

Students will learn how to solder, saw, file, texture and rivet using silver and base metals. Projects will include a silver ring, a pair of silver earrings and a simple pendant using the various techniques learned in the class. $ 150 (includes supplies)

Using charcoal we will explore drawing from a model in this class. Emphasis will be placed on anatomy and human proportions as well as movement and balance.  New and experienced students welcome. $125 (includes materials & model fee)

Sundays, April 11-25, 2:30-4pm (3 weeks)

For kids ages 8 and up, this class introduces beginner to intermediate soft pastel, pen and ink. Focus on the human figure, gesture drawing fundamentals and portrait drawing as well as technique. In some cases thru the use of progressive drawing (helpful for working as a team as used at times in graphic design, comic book art, illustration and a brief overview on its  uses in fine art history in the renaissance period.
$15 per class (attend one or all three)!

Thursday, April 22, 6-9pm

Celebrate Earth Day by creating functional art with nature. We will create original wall pockets and soap dishes by pressing natural objects such as flowers and leaves into clay. Bring in flat leaves and flowers (devil’s club, cedar foliage, grasses, twisted stock…) to personalize your pieces. $55 (materials included)

For students who have completed a warp to weave class, we are now offering an open studio so you can continue Saori weaving. Please call to reserve a loom in advance. $15 (plus $2 an ounce for materials)

For intermediate and advanced students, the Jewelry Studio is an opportunity to work independently under the guidance of an advanced artist. Bring your own materials, use our equipment. Drop in, or call with questions. $10 per session (bring your own supplies)

 

Figure Drawing Studio

The Canvas is offering an open studio for independent artists interested in practicing figure drawing from a model. Please bring your own drawing supplies. $15

 

 

March 2010 Day Habilitation Classes:

• Art classes are offered as part of the Day Habilitation program through REACH. Cost is based on a sliding fee scale ($5-$25 per person; pay as you can) for anyone joining these classes. Classes are designed to meet the needs of adults who experience developmental disabilities. Support staff is available for individualized assistance. To register for Day Habilitation call Annie Geselle at 586-1750.

• Community members are welcome to join the Wednesday evening class, 4:30-6:00pm weekly. Drop in and join class, or give us a call if you have questions about current class projects.

• If you are interested in volunteering as an artist, participating in classes, or helping with special projects at the Canvas, please call MK at 586-1750.
