Day Habilitation Program

To register for classes, call 907-586-1750 or email your name, classes of interest and phone number to: info@canvasarts.org. Full payment must be made at the time of registration. Notice of withdrawal must be received no later than 7 days prior to the first day of class. No refunds will be given after that time. Credit will not be given for missed classes.

Line your windowsill with artful flowerpots. Explore hand-building techniques and create one large pot or a series of small flowerpots in this workshop. Glaze on 8/7, or in one of our open glazing studios. $45

Have you ever wondered how to use the mysterious extruder in our pottery studio? This is your chance to take hand building to the next level. Portraits reveal as much about the artist as they do about the subject. This workshop will involve the making of self-portraits and those of others. Pursue a variety of approaches from realism to expressionism and use info from memory and subjective experience, using pencil and charcoal. Beginning and advanced students welcome. $75 per session


Magnificent Obsessions

Tuesdays, July 20-27, 6:30-9pm (2 week)

Is art making obsessive? Activities that affirm this question will be the focus of this workshop. The class will address issues of obsession: emotional/psychological states, collecting/creating, elements of time, scale and quantity, and specifically how these issues inform and affect the art process. Students may select from a wide variety of materials (traditional & found) and processes in the making of 2-dimensional and 3-dimensional work. Personal experience and inquiry will strongly inform each students’ direction. Beginning and advanced students welcome. $75 (includes materials).

1+1=3. Collaboration is about creating something that no one individual could have done alone, and at its best, results in work that is more than the sum of its parts. For anyone interested in giving, taking, sharing, negotiating, teaching, learning, and drawing, this is the workshop for you. Initial assignments will explore material and formal aspects of collaboration. Building on these skills, students will engage in drawings that also require conceptual collaboration. $75 (includes materials).

Zimbabwean marimba music is an art discipline steeped in the tradition of the Shona people of Zimbabwe. The music emphasizes community, beautiful polyrhythmic melodies and infectious rhythms that encourage participation by everyone, no matter what your musical experience. $75

Fused Glass Workshop

Sunday, July 25, 1-2:30pm & 2:30-4pm (2 sessions)

Learn how to make fused glass pendants and help the Canvas raise funds for our non-profit. Participants make several pieces of glass art to be sold in the Canvas Gallery and pick one to keep. $25 (includes materials)

Figure Drawing/Painting Workshop

This workshop provides students an opportunity to take a drawing or painting to a completed level by offering a long session with a model.  We will begin with warm up poses and then set a single pose for the rest of the session.  Emphasis will be placed on light and composition.  $55 (includes materials & model fee).

Learn how to create your own one of a kind landscape collage using a variety of decorative papers.  Bring a landscape image or work free form.  Discussion about how to draw a landscape will start the class.  Join the fun as we rip, cut and paste down papers to create something amazing.  $65 (materials included).

Working from personal photographs students will explore landscape painting.  We will examine compositions in nature along with foreground, middle ground and background, as well as learning to use atmospheric space to create depth in painting.  All levels and abilities welcome.  $125 (materials included).

Kids create their own castle, kings and queens…. and a dragon, of course!  Learn the fundamentals of hand building with clay in this 3-week workshops.  For kids 7 and up.

You don’t have to be from outer space to take this class, just be willing to create creatures out of clay that plan to take a life of their own.  Kids 7 & up.  $95 (materials included).

Our Kids Wheel throwing classes are designed for kids age 10 and up.  Kids under 10 are welcome to attend with an adult support.  Learn the fundamentals of centering, trimming and glazing.  $85 (materials included).

Shim Sham Shimmy

Come and learn a beginning tap dance called the Shim Sham Shimmy.  Choreographed in the 1930's by Leonard Reed, this historic dance is performed by tap and swing dancers world wide. The dance can be learned by beginning or advanced dancers.
No tap shoes required; Recommend sneakers.  $5 per session

Free Family Day: Fabric Collage

Fabric Collage is like painting with fabric or quilting without sewing.  Cut and glue varied & colorful fabrics and transform pictures from your imagination into vibrant and tactile works of art.  All ages welcome.  Free.

This project is supported in part by the Juneau Arts and Humanities Council and the City and Borough of Juneau.

Wheel Throwing Pottery Classes

In beginning wheel throwing classes students will learn basic wheel skills including centering, throwing, trimming, and glazing.

In intermermediate/advanced class, students who have the basics down and want to move to the next level work on independent wheel throwing or hand-building projects under the guidence of an instructor. This is your opportunity to ask questions and give yourself new challenges! Hand builders or wheel throwing students welcomed. There are additional open studio times with these pottery classes.

Pottery Open Studio

The Canavs offers open pottery punch cards for experienced potters. With the punch card you recieve one 25 pound bag of clay and five 3-hour visits. Bisque firing, glazes, and glaze fires are included in the cost of the visit. Additional clay is available to purchase. Call or check the Canvas front desk for the current open pottery studio calendar. $125 (5 open studio visits). Must sign up to reserve wheel time.

 

 

July/August 2010 Day Habilitation Classes:

• Art classes are offered as part of the Day Habilitation program through REACH. Cost is based on a sliding fee scale ($5-$25 per person; pay as you can) for anyone joining these classes. Local and guest artists instruct the class using a hands on approach; Canvas staff provide additional support as needed. The structure of the class allows students to work at a suitable pace, tap into and develop their own artist style, and, at the instructor’s discretion, work on an independent project. There is time dedicated for expression through other art forms, such as music and movement. Classes are designed to meet the needs of adults who experience developmental disabilities.
