August 2008 Exhibit:
Something Fishy's Going On!
by Barbara Lydon

Photograph by Tim Chandonnet

I don't know how it is that I can play with mud all day and feel completely satisfied. For whatever reason, clay speaks to me. --And what do I do? I respond to it by throwing it, pulling it, pinching it, and contorting it.

My artwork tends to be whimsical and humorous-a reflection of my personality.  The inspiration for my show “Something fishy’s going on….” came from my love of the outdoor world and my efforts to become a fisher-person.  My husband and I work for the Forest Service as a Wilderness Rangers traveling by sea kayak, so we are always on the water’s surface.  We also like to experience what lies below this surface.  At low tides, we’ll often explore the inner tidal slimes, goos and creepie crawlies, mystified by the way they shake, pucker and squirt.  But it was my Dad who really got me hooked on fish; He has always been an amazing fisherman.  It’s as if he looks at the sport of fishing as an art in and of itself.  Me, on the other hand, I really understand why they call it “fishing” instead of “catching”.  Sure, the double uglies and triple uglies that I catch are rewarding, but perhaps I should just stick with clay.

All of the pieces in this show are handbuilt from various clay bodies and fired to cone 6.

Art has been a key component in my life since I was a child. I studied at Penn State, obtaining an BA in Art Education, BFA in sculpture, and an Art History Minor.  I have been an art teacher for nine years, and dreamer all my life. Like the artist Fredd Babb said of his Art major,  “I really wanted to be a peace talks negotiator, but I thought I should have something to fall back on.” Currently, I am devising a plan in which Art will save the world. Stay tuned.....
