Artist Statement

I’m drawn by a desire to capture and preserve something that catches my eye, whether it’s a color, combination of colors, the play of light and shadow, or a particular scene. That desire has led me from charcoal sketching, to oil painting, to water color, and back to oil painting.

Completing a painting provides me with a sense of satisfaction from achieving a creative goal I’ve set for myself. I strive to express my version of what I see in a spontaneous way with fresh brushstrokes. I struggle with finding the balance between simplicity and excess detail. I know my painting is finished when I’ve expressed what I wanted to say without overworking the piece.
