Artist Statement

These paper collages came about because I couldn’t resist the beautiful colors to be found in magazines, brochures, and catalogs. Somehow, I thought, there should be something to rescue those beautiful reds, blues, greens, etc., so I began cutting the printed matter off and admiring the color…. not to mention the weird shapes and sizes cutting had brought about. I decided to make a collage, utilizing a piece of foam board that just happened to be available. The result was Mosi-Ache (named after the back ache I got bending over the pasting table). Then, inspired by the good colors, I began cutting out the various other things to be found in ads, such as animals, birds, flowers and butterflies. I was just having fun, mixing and matching these with the brilliant colors I was finding in great profusion. I was good at cutting out, because I had done a lot of that in my youth. Besides, it gave me pleasure… and reasons to sit down a spell! It wasn’t until I had put together several foam boards with cut-outs as well as my color scraps (one idea led to other possibilities), that my friend MK suggested it was art, and I joined Grandma Moses in the art world!
