"Elicit" started in a moment of grief about a year ago, while I was sobbing. Later, thinking about extreme emotional states, internal tipping points, I decided to find a way to express tension through line. What makes us go on? What makes us give up? How to represent near breaking points? I started exploring balance and contrast of emotion and tension through line and movement.

Instead of figuring out how to express tension through line, I fell in love with knots. While experimenting with stretching fabric, flexing muscle, tightening knots, I found that these materials all find a way to relax into their landing state. I found tension transformed into grace, every time, which I realize now is just what I was looking for.

But what this show is really about is rediscovering the joy of drawing, something I knew well as a child and forgot to practice for the past 25 years. I love the tactile feeling of pencil, charcoal and ink on paper. It's so simple, immediately allowing my mind to focus, giving ideas space to expand, literally drawing out my thoughts.
