Youth who can work independently are certainly invited to join adults in any community class! In addition, here are some current class offerings that are specifically geared towards younger artists:

Marimba is a large xylophone-like instrument, steeped in the tradition of the Shona people of Zimbabwe. The music emphasizes community, beautiful polyrhythmic melodies and infectious rhythms that encourage participation by everyone, no matter what your musical experience. New and experienced musicians welcome.  Youth 9 and up welcome in Kids classes.

The Mbira is a hand held instrument, played in many cultures throughout the world.  Learn a traditional Zimbabwean song and discover the joy of mbira .  $45

In Kids Wheel, kids age 10 and up will explore wheel throwing and hand building.  Teens are welcome in adult beginning wheel throwing classes (adult classes include 6 additional open studio sessions, to be used during course).  For kids under age 9 who want to explore clay, bring an adult and learn together in our Parent-Kid Clay classes.  In Int Wheel, the classs will focus on creating sets of small bowls and plates by focusing on the balance of shape and trimming. Materials included in all classes.

 

Woosh Kinaadeiyí Poetry Slam & Open Mic
with NaMee & Na Haan
Friday, Jan 20th, 6:30-9pm ******Moved to the Rookery*******

We welcome poets and performers of all ages and abilities. Sign up at 6:00pm. The Open Mic (6:30) is open to any type of performance—poetry, music, yoga poses while beatboxing classic rock songs—whatever your talent may be! The Poetry Slam (7:15) is a friendly competition, with the winner taking home $25 cash. Come share your stuff, or listen and cheer folks on! Featuring DJ Manu on the turntables.

Musical Junk Day

Thanks to financial support from Friends of Recycling, the Canvas is offering an opportunity for aspiring repurpose artists of all ages to make trash musical!  Bring supplies to share, and come with an open mind.  Let’s make noise!

Kids age 8 and up will explore making pottery using balloons as molds.  Create animals, monster creatures, piggy banks, or whatever your imagination can come up with! $115 (included materials).

Sundays, Feb 5th-26th,  10am-1pm (4 weeks)

If you could see your soul, what would it look like? We will take a journey to discover our soul’s desire, exploring the arc of your life over four weeks of painting, mixed media, or whatever medium whispers a personal truth to you.  All ability levels welcome. $125 (materials included).

Early Release Mondays, Feb 13th and 27th,  2-4pm (2 week)

This short hand-building course will focus on small hand-built sculptures.  Students will build small creatures out of pinch pots. For youth ages 8 and up. $50 (included materials).

Tuesday Feb 21st and Wednesday Feb 22nd, 9am-noon

This multi medium two day kids’ workshop allows kids to explore faces! Try your hand (and your face!) at mask making and exploring portraits through collage. For youth ages 8 and up. $55 (materials included).


light painting

Family Light Painting
Saturday, February 25th, 10:30am-Noon

Slow down that shutter speed and embrace the darkness! Come to a blacked out Canvas studio to create light paintings in photographs. Bring flashlights, leds, anything that makes light. We’ll have a camera and email you your work or bring your own camera and we’ll try our darndest to figure it out!      $ donations accepted
